The Rona Diaries: Week Three

Candace
There is a counter on MSNBC tracking the number of dead. Right now it reads 1,605.  Newscasters broadcast from their homes in front of simulated backgrounds.  Today the United States has the greatest number of COVID-19 cases in the world.  I am not in denial anymore; I have settled into being at home, and it is almost inconceivable that I was walking around a garden with Roberto last week.

New York is being treated as a foreign country populated by undesirables.  Governors are requiring New Yorkers who travel into their state to self-quarantine for two weeks.  Chloe's school contacted me about picking up a ChromeBook for her distance learning program and specified that I arrive wearing gloves and a mask.  It's that bad.

Today I look forward to Governor Cuomo's daily press conferences. It feels good to be reminded that there are politicians who are articulate, empathetic, and authentic.  My guilty pleasure is no longer shopping; it's simultaneously watching The President's daily news conferences while reading Jonathan Capeheart's tweets.  Sometimes I will have a glass of wine.

I'm going to miss Spring in New York City;  tulips, Cherry Blossoms, and magnolia trees-but I'm looking forward to teaching online in a rotating selection of kaftans!

In the next couple of weeks I really hope that the numbers of cases in the U.S go down and that people would be able to go back to school and be able to go outside without having to worry about getting sick. I still get bored at home and I miss my friends. I also miss the activities I used to do like track and basketball and going to dance classes. China and I think another country in Asia are already opening back up and so are schools. They were able to contain people with the virus and stop spreading. I hope we would be able to achieve something like that very soon. In the beginning of this vacation, I was sort of excited to have a break from school, but now it just got boring and exhausting with all the online work. This corona-cation allowed me to stay home and relax which I kind of enjoyed, but now all I wanna do is go back to school.
