The Rona Diaries: Week Four

Candace:
Have ambulance sirens always sounded this way-so hollow and mournful?

There have been 8, 493 deaths in the United States due to COVID-19. I keep having to adjust that statistic as I write because the numbers keep ticking up.   Experts are predicting that there will be as many as 200,000 casualties with perfect adherence to social distancing  (which we all know isn't happening).  We are being told that we should wear cloth masks when we go out, which doesn't really affect me because I haven't left the house in a week.  Nevertheless, I brought an African Print mask on Etsy from a woman in Minnesota. What can I say? I'm not very crafty.

What I have been doing is eating: cookies, pound cake, pasta, chips, bread, and soda.  (Don't tell Roberto).

I started teaching online this week. Many of my students fled the city as soon as school closed.  They are learning remotely from places like Upstate New York, Rhode Island, and Florida.   Meanwhile, it has been nice to have Chloe sit next to me at the table on her Zoom calls while I'm on Google Meet.  I've been pleasantly surprised with how well she's coping with our changed circumstances.  She's not nearly as sulky and mean as I thought she would be.  I think that I have Google and Apple to thank for much of that!  I also think that there is something vicious about middle-school girls that perhaps they all needed a break from.

Chloe:
Once this pandemic is over, hopefully before the school year ends, I would like to see a few friends at school. I also look forward to having a good summer break.  Me and my friends Zahir and Nathalie planned on spending a lot of time together over the summer, like going to the pool, the beach, the movies and also shopping. I also look forward to going out almost everyday and also traveling a lot. Places I would like to go over the summer are Cuba, back to Florida and Jamaica. It would be really cool if I got to travel out of my state with a friend. It could just be me, a friend and my mom or another parent. I'm just looking forward to all of this being over soon.
