These Ghosts Are Family

These Ghosts Are Family is Maisy Card's ambitious and well written debut novel.  The narrative begins with a man named Abel Paisley who fakes his death in order to begin his life anew.  The book, which takes place in both Jamaica and New York, moves back and forth through time telling the story of those who came before and those who came after him.

This is a story that you can lose yourself in; the characters are all well drawn and engaging.  Card is equally adept at writing men and women, blacks and whites.  However, the narrative's strength is also its greatest weakness- it is easy to get lost.  There are so many characters that it's hard to figure out who is who and how they are related. Days after finishing the novel, I'm still feeling like I missed something.  This would be an excellent book to listen to on audiobook so I am looking forward to revisiting it.
